Rath the Relentless pivots on multiple axes. Fire shoots from its mouth. A steel shield rises between the flippers.
Overview
Stern Pinball's Dungeons & Dragons: The Tyrant's Eye Premium is a full-featured commercial pinball machine built around the D&D franchise in celebration of its 50th anniversary. Players take on the role of Dragonshield Guild members battling Tiamat, Xanathar, Balinor, and Sammaster across a branching campaign that drives toward multiple story endings. The Premium edition's centerpiece is Rath the Relentless — Stern's most mechanically complex animatronic to date — a multi-axis red dragon voiced by Michael Dorn that physically reacts to every ball hit.
Key Features
Rath the Relentless — Multi-Axis Animatronic Dragon
The dragon mech moves across multiple axes and is equipped with omnidirectional impact sensing technology, so it physically responds to wherever the ball strikes it. When Rath breathes fire, up to three pinballs launch from the dragon's mouth simultaneously — a mechanically visible event readable from across the room. Hitting the 3-bank target steals the dragon's treasure and advances the campaign. Michael Dorn voices the character, with audio delivered through the cabinet's speaker system during play.
Deployable Metal Shield Between the Flippers
Players can raise a physical metal shield between the flippers — an active defensive mechanism unique to this playfield. The shield blocks incoming balls fired from Rath's mouth and can also be used to redirect shots toward upper playfield targets.
Electromagnet-Powered Gelatinous Cube
An electromagnet underneath the playfield powers the gelatinous cube feature, which captures and freezes the pinball mid-playfield. The ball stops in place — visibly — before releasing, creating a timing interruption that changes the flow of the active ball.
Disappearing Trap Door and Hidden Passageways
A motorized trap door in the playfield surface drops open to route balls into lower dungeon levels, with hidden passageways connecting different areas of the playfield. Each dungeon level presents different shot requirements and narrative progression opportunities.
Insider Connected Platform with PinSave System
Stern's Insider Connected platform links the cabinet to a global player network via the Insider Connected App, available on iOS and Android. The PinSave System stores individual player progress — character experience points, inventory items, and campaign state — so returning players continue from where they stopped rather than restarting. Operators receive ongoing code updates from Stern Pinball through the platform. Players can also opt into cooperative play, sharing campaign progress across a session.
Branching Campaign with Randomized Outcomes
Shot choices and in-game dice rolls control which campaign path activates, with each run producing different characters, trinkets, and weekly rotating items. The game drives toward multiple distinct story endings, and completing a campaign unlocks additional playable characters for subsequent sessions. Fizmo's in-game store and a treasure chest mechanic that releases mimic monsters add further session-to-session variation without requiring physical toy swaps.
Premium Cabinet Finish and Optics
The Premium edition ships with "Dragon Red" powder-coated armor, anti-reflective playfield glass, and exclusive inside art blades by artist Vincent Proce. Dynamic RGB lighting runs across the playfield, and the custom soundtrack — composed by Cris Velasco — is delivered through an upgraded speaker system. The full voice cast includes Michael Dorn, Matthew Mercer, Laura Bailey, Marisha Ray, Kevin Smith, Luke Gygax, Gerard Way, and additional talent across eleven credited performers.
How It Plays
The player's primary target is the Rath the Relentless mech — hitting its body triggers axis movement and omnidirectional impact responses, while connecting on the 3-bank target drains the dragon's treasure. When Rath breathes fire, up to three balls erupt from the dragon's mouth simultaneously, and the player activates the metal shield between the flippers to block or redirect them. From the aisle, bystanders see the dragon pivot and recoil, balls launching from its mouth, the shield rising, and the playfield trap door dropping open — mechanical events stacked in rapid sequence during an active multi-ball.

Why Operators Love It
Ongoing Code Updates Over the Network
Stern pushes software updates to the cabinet through Insider Connected, extending and modifying gameplay without requiring a service visit. New characters, weekly rotating items, and campaign content arrive remotely — the machine's code base grows after installation.
PinSave Stores Player Progress Between Sessions
PinSave stores each registered player's campaign state — experience points, inventory, and story progress — between sessions. A player who runs out of time can return to the same machine and resume exactly where they left off, eliminating the friction of restarting a multi-session campaign from zero. Unregistered players can select traditional mode with no operator reconfiguration required between session types.
Weekly-Rotating Content Without Physical Restocking
Fizmo's in-game store and the randomized mimic treasure chest mechanic generate session-to-session variation in gameplay outcomes through software — no physical toy swaps, no consumable restocking, no manual prize resets between plays.
Standard North American Single-Outlet Install
The cabinet runs on 110V AC, 60 Hz and connects to a single standard outlet. No step-down transformer, no phase converter, and no special electrical prep is required for North American venue installations.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Rath the Relentless in Dungeons & Dragons: The Tyrant's Eye?
Rath the Relentless is the red dragon animatronic mech mounted on the playfield. It moves on multiple axes, uses omnidirectional impact sensing to react to ball hits, and fires up to three pinballs from its mouth. It is voiced by actor Michael Dorn, and hitting the 3-bank target steals the dragon's treasure to advance the campaign.
How does the PinSave System work on Dungeons & Dragons: The Tyrant's Eye?
PinSave is part of Stern's Insider Connected platform. Registered players' campaign progress — including character experience points, inventory items, and story state — is stored and retrieved each time they play on an Insider Connected-enabled cabinet. Players who prefer a fresh start can disable saved progress and play in traditional mode without registration.
Does Dungeons & Dragons: The Tyrant's Eye support cooperative play?
Yes. Through Insider Connected, multiple players can share campaign progress cooperatively during a session. Each player can also play independently with their own saved profile, or without registration in standard mode — all three configurations are available on the same cabinet without operator intervention.
What are the assembled dimensions and weight of the Tyrant's Eye Premium?
The cabinet measures 27 in W x 55 in D x 75.5 in H assembled and weighs approximately 270 lbs. These dimensions fit standard pinball machine floor slots and doorways typical of commercial arcade venues.
Ideal Placement
The Tyrant's Eye fits naturally in family entertainment centers, movie theater lobbies, and mall arcades where the dragon animatronic's visible axis motion draws walk-up attention from adjacent areas. The branching campaign structure and weekly-rotating content also suit college student unions, hotel game rooms, and bar game rooms where the same players return regularly and benefit from persistent progress between visits.
