A numbered ice surface. Iconic red handles. Color-changing LED glow built into the base itself.
Overview
The 40th Anniversary Original Chexx Bubble Hockey is a limited-edition run of exactly 200 units, hand-built in Buffalo, NY by Innovative Concepts in Entertainment (ICE) to replicate the first Chexx game released in 1982. It carries the original blue base and red handles, a numbered 1/8" frosted acrylic ice surface bearing the "Miracle on Ice" USA vs. CCCP matchup, and updated electronics including a dual 5" LCD jumbotron scoreboard with color-changing LED lighting on both the cabinet and the base. Available in a Home Edition or a Coin-Door Arcade Version, this unit ships mostly assembled and connects in approximately 15 minutes with two people.
Key Features
Numbered Limited-Edition Ice Surface
Only 200 units exist in this run, and each one carries a unique edition number laser-etched directly onto the 1/8" frosted acrylic ice surface. The surface uses back-printed graphics with a textured pebble finish that replicates the look of the original 1982 Chexx playfield. Presale customers may select their specific edition number.
Dual 5" LCD Jumbotron Scoreboard
Two 5" LCD displays sit inside the overhead jumbotron housing and show live scoring, animations, and game state. Score updates are visible from across the room without requiring players to look away from the playfield.
Base and Cabinet Color-Changing LED Lighting
LED lighting runs along the underside of the cabinet and is also built directly into the blue base — a feature new to this anniversary edition. Both lighting zones produce color-changing glow independently, making the full unit visible and lit from floor level to the top of the dome.
Patented Clutch and Gear Design with Molded Rods
ICE's patented clutch and gear mechanism keeps player figures upright and on the ice surface at all times — they do not lie flat on contact the way non-clutch rods do. The molded rods themselves are a recent addition to this system, and the electronics are accessible without removing the dome or disassembling the cabinet.
Hand-Painted USA vs. CCCP Players
Every player figure on the 40th Anniversary edition is hand-painted to represent the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" matchup: USA vs. CCCP (Russia/USSR). The figures are produced by hand in the USA and match the aesthetic of the original 1982 game.
Immersive Audio Package
The sound system includes Rick Jeanneret voice-over commentary, a National Anthem opener, stadium crowd noise, and a dedicated Boo button. The audio package runs through the onboard electronics and operates on the same 110V connection as the rest of the unit.
How It Plays
Each player grips one of the red handles on their side of the cabinet and works the rods — spinning to shoot and sliding laterally to position their line — while ICE's patented clutch system keeps every figure upright on the puck-level ice surface throughout play. The dual jumbotron LCDs overhead update score and display animations in real time, so the scoreboard reads from any position around the table. Rick Jeanneret commentary and stadium audio fire through each play, audible across the room at normal game-room noise levels.

Why Operators Love It
Coin-Door Arcade Version Available at Ordering
The 40th Anniversary unit is offered in a Coin-Door Arcade Version at the time of order — no retrofit required after delivery. The coin mechanism is factory-installed before the game ships from the Buffalo, NY facility.
Aluminum Cabinet and Lexan Dome Resist Abuse
The cabinet is constructed from American-made aluminum and the dome is unbreakable Lexan polycarbonate — the same material used on ICE's Arena Rink Mat accessory. ICE's own documentation states the unit withstands punching, kicking, dropping, and scratching without affecting play.
Accessible Electronics for On-Site Service
The electronics bay is accessible without removing the dome or fully disassembling the cabinet. The game ships with a parts pack that includes a manual and all tools needed for service, so basic maintenance does not require ordering specialized equipment separately.
Split-Base Option for Tight Doorways
An optional split base is available for venues with doorways under 32 inches wide. The split base ships fully assembled and breaks the base into two sections for passage, then reconnects on-site — removing a common install barrier for older buildings and back-room locations.
Frequently Asked Questions
What warranty does the 40th Anniversary Original Chexx Bubble Hockey come with?
The Home Edition and the Coin-Door Arcade Version includes a 60-day manufacturer's warranty. An optional 12-month extended warranty is available as an add-on at the time of purchase.
How long does it take to assemble the 40th Anniversary Original Chexx Bubble Hockey?
Assembly takes approximately 15 minutes with two people. The process involves plugging in the cables between the base and cabinet assemblies and securing four bolts. A parts pack with a manual and all required tools is included with every unit.
What outlet does the 40th Anniversary Chexx require?
The unit runs on a standard 110V / 120V, 3-prong household outlet. A power cord is included. The game is rated for indoor use only — outdoor use voids the warranty.
Where is the 40th Anniversary Original Chexx Bubble Hockey manufactured?
Every unit is hand-built at ICE's facility just outside Buffalo, NY, USA — the same location where ICE has produced bubble hockey tables since 1982. The aluminum cabinet, plastic components, and player figures are all American-made.
Ideal Placement
The 40th Anniversary Original Chexx fits naturally in hockey arenas, sports bars, and restaurant game rooms where the "Miracle on Ice" theme resonates with the existing audience. Its assembled footprint of 54 in x 36 in (79 in wide with rods extended) fits standard game-room floor slots in bowling center arcades, family entertainment centers, and hotel game rooms. The limited-edition numbered playfield and collector framing also make it a fit for home game rooms, man caves, and private club lounges where display value matters alongside playability.
